Dans les parcs et réserves naturels, c'est généralement de nuit que sont traqués les braconniers d'animaux sauvages ! Et comme il n'y aura de toute façon jamais assez de rangers pour patrouiller sur le terrain, des drones équipés de caméras thermiques sont désormais de la partie. Problème : l'image n'est pas toujours de bonne qualité et la source de chaleur détectée peut émaner aussi bien d'un braconnier que d'un animal.<br/>

faire en sorte que la reconnaissance soit rapide, quasi-immédiate, permettant aux rangers d'intervenir le plus vite possible. Le flux vidéo envoyé depuis un drone sur un ordinateur portable des rangers est en fait transféré sur les serveurs de Microsoft où les images sont analysées par l'algorithme. Une version du dispositif a aussi été développée pour fonctionner entièrement sur ordinateur dans les zones reculées à faible connectivité, de manière à ne pas avoir à en appeler aux serveurs distants de Microsoft.<br/>

Les tests ont été menés en laboratoire puis sur le terrain en Afrique du Sud. D'après l'article de recherche, l'algorithme a tellement bien fonctionné, mieux que l'application EyeSpy utilisée jusque-là, qu'il est déjà envisagé de s'en servir dans un parc national du Botswana. La détection a fonctionné en quelque trois dixièmes de seconde.
